Hand-picked clove buds direct from their native source in Indonesia.
Cloves are native to Indonesia and we are fortunate to have been involved with producing the fragrant bud from early on. They require a warm humid climate, preferring an ocean view, for which Indonesia is ideal. Cloves are one of the spices that prompted the colonization of Indonesia and the European Age of Exploration. Some of our farmers can trace the ancestry of their trees back to varieties that were spread across the island nation by the Dutch. They are the strongest of the aromatic spices and one of the reasons Indonesia is known as 'The Spice Islands'.
To this day, Indonesia is the largest consumer and producer of cloves. Over 90% of the heady spice is consumed within the country. With the support of local knowledge, we harness the sweet and spicy notes of the flower into the evergreen bud. We offer a range of all natural clove products including whole, ground, powder extract, and liquid extract. We also offer cloves that comply with our internal ethical and sustainable agricultural standard, NFC.
Cloves are rich in manganese and known for their antiseptic properties. They are also associated with the warming and soothing qualities derived from their eugenol content. Cloves are used in a variety of sweet and savory applications. Find them in traditional holiday dishes, mulled wine, sausages, soups, teas, baked goods, meat, and broths.
trace your cloves to its origin
Our cloves come from the beautiful island of Sulawesi. A tree grown from seed takes 7 years to flower. Given the right conditions, clove trees can flower multiple times year
Unopened pink buds must be harvested at just the right moment. The cloves are carefully handpicked to ensure the branches of the tree are not damaged.
Cloves must be dried right away to prevent the growth of mold. We only buy one-year-old cloves that have had time to slowly dry, developing a unique flavor. We test for the eugenol content in order to sell premium clove products.
After the cloves are sun-dried, they are ground. We never water down the clove flavor by diluting the spice with any additives.
